type trapped

type in "trapped" on flickr, and stumble upon brooke shaden's photos. my favorites are the less-manipulated ones, dealing with the ordinary body. that one also has sinks.

this stopped me in my tracks.

reminiscent of a dolled-down, less explicit
Cindy Sherman, she uses herself as subject to depict victimization, both by the self and by external forces.

self-victimization often feels like it's impelled by external forces. . . is this a lie?

  1. Aya, these are quite violent. She must be working through some very difficult things. (If she's not, then I wonder at her motivation.) Do you know Francis Bacon? Similarly disturbing, less pretty.

Re: "self-victimization": depends on what you mean by this! Also depends on how you're separating "internal" and "external".

  2. yes! we studied Francis Bacon intensively in my aesthethics class this semester. he was the artist we focused on for the 'painting' unit.

he is interesting because he denies that his paintings have narrative--they are just about sensation. philosopher gilles deleuze takes him at his word, and it's some of the most facinating philosophy i've read.

  3. I don't know why, but I started crying when I saw this one.
